No definition has been proposed. Romer (1966) established this taxon, which was later used by Sill (1967) and Steel (1973) to contain the families Notochampsidae and Proterochampsidae, which were then seen as basal crocodilians. Recent cladistic analyses have shown proterochampsids to lie outside Archosauria as defined in this database (e.g. Gauthier 1986; Sereno 1991; Juul 1994; Benton 1999).
