Critique Novas (1992b:127) named this taxon and listed several synapomorphies but did not specify included taxa or present a phylogenetic definition. The taxon also was not used in a later discussion of Abelisauridae by Novas (1997) but has been used infrequently by other authors (e.g. Coria and Salgado 2000). Apparently without realizing, Tykoski and Rowe (2004:64) presented the first phylogenetic definition for this taxon, attributing it to unnamed authors. Their definition identifies the same clade as does the definition of Abelisauroidea presented in this compilation and previously in the literature (Wilson et al. 2003).
